“They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.”
A hundred (and one) years ago, the world reached Armistice. The Treaty of Versailles. And on that day, the 11th of November, 1918, the guns fell silent. Nations could finally go into mourning for the sons they lost. For the daughters lost. For the mothers and fathers whose lives came to an early end. For the families broken apart by war, they could finally mourn.
Because the guns fell silent. But we, who remain long after the fact, we remember. We honour their service and their sacrifice, for we know it was not in vain. And every year, we remember and commemorate the loss of so many brave men and women who had no intention of going off to war or having their homes shattered by war atrocities. In Australia, we engage in a minute silence to ensure we never forget. And we remember through three simple words.
Lest We Forget.
