Friday 30 March Progress Report (Previous Report)
Where My Word Count Should Be: 52,500 words
Where My Word Count Is: 52,518 words
- Overview
I had an idea of how to go into today, but I feel I went off on a positive tangent. I do something like that quite often and it proves to be a net positive for the novel. I find that when I write the way I write, which is “in the moment” I see things I would not think of the week before. If an idea pops into my head, I will explore what I can do with it and make sure it fits the world. If it does, I add it to the story, but if I cannot make it fit, I will dump it and continue with my original plan.
Like much of this week, there was quite a deal of character building that disguised the plot advancements. I cannot state it enough that I want my characters to feel realistic. They have emotions like you or me and they will react to the world around them with those emotions. Without that realism, then why should a reader care about the character?
- What I Did Today
I continued work on Chapter 13 – Horizon’s End by bringing the backstory of Abygail Qilbyrn into focus, or at least part of it. For this, I brought Assassins and Shadows into The Elder Ones canon and that was something I always intended to do from the moment I wrote that for my degree. It is always a challenge to introduce supplementary material into such a developed world, but I feel that utilising small segments over time is the best way to go.
- The Best Sample From Today
Since I don’t hold anything back in my novels, the best work from today is… more intense than a lot of my previous work. It is difficult to add what amounts to pornography into any form of novel these days, but in The Elder Ones, sexual scenes play a pivotal role in the story as they develop the relationships between characters.
Aby does not seem to care how Gaelìn reacts to her touch, so long as there is a reaction. Aby first focuses on Gaelìn’s breasts, supple and firm in her grasp. The cold air ensures that Gaelìn’s pert nipples find themselves struck with a wave of pleasure the second Aby removes Gaelìn’s shirt. Aby leans down to lock lips with Gaelìn again and the two wrap their arms around each other. Aby grinds her hips in a suggestive manner against Gaelìn. It is the first time in over a month the two females have had the opportunity to experience the warm and tender embrace of a lover. Aby intends to make every second with Gaelìn count as she breaks the kiss with a cheeky grin.
I don’t skirt what is considered to be politically correct in my novels and the above paragraph is the perfect example of that. Any editor worth their salt would do their best to censor the paragraph down to being as vague as possible or even remove it entirely. Even in today’s accepting world, lesbian scenes are not well looked upon. Thankfully, I don’t really care about an editor’s opinion on this. The world NEEDS paragraphs like this one.
- How Productive I Felt I Was
I have the tendency to avoid anything too overt with my writing. As my sample from today showed, all sense of modesty in my writing went out the window. As an author, I want to write what I want to read and I find there is far too little sexual activity mentioned in any kind of book, or if there is, it is over too quick and does little for the character. I am firmly in the camp that believes sex is meant to be fun and it is a bonding tool for those involved.
The stakes for both Gaelìn and Abygail have gone up from the simple fact their relationship is now one revolving around not only mentoring, but sexual relations. There is a name for such a thing, though it eludes me right now. I also managed to resolve the issue of how the four will travel across the sea to The Green Desert, so story was not neglected for the sheer shock value of “oh look, a detailed sex scene.”
- What I Intend To Write Next Week
Next week will have the group set sail for The Green Desert and look more into the history between Jhendar Saltsage and Abygail Qilbyrn. I continue to remain proud of how far I have come in such a short time and, as always, I look forward to continuing work next week.
