Eden: A Paradise It Is Not

This Week, Eden’s Progress Report is dedicated to the life of Professor Stephen Hawking. His contributions to not just physics but all of humanity are an inspiration to millions, including myself. He may be gone from this world, but he will never be forgotten.

  • Overview

Thursday continues to be a weird day for me to write. Perhaps it is because of my weird sleep schedule or the sheer stress of unwanted guests at home, but I wanted to nap the moment I tried to start my writing. It has nothing to do with Eden as a novel, as I do enjoy Eden, especially the work I did today. Sometimes we have these days that we run out of energy and don’t know what to do about it.

I did manage to push through to finish my writing, and I wound up quite pleased with the results I ended up with. Eden continues to develop at a rapid pace and it give me hope and confidence. The work I am doing as part of this writing challenge is laying the foundations for my writing career and it makes me enjoy what I do more and more.

To know that people do care and read my stuff does bring a legitimate tear to my eye every time I think about how far I have come and the obstacles I’ve been forced to overcome in my life. It’s sort of a validation to know I am good at something, even if a lot of people do not appreciate the work that goes into each and every word that a writer puts onto a page.

  • What I Did Today

Today was fun! Fun in the sense I could finally tie Eden to Chronicles: Ascension and begin the intricate weaving of my expanded universe. I used today to give the reader the first true glimpse of how the Expoletian Expeditionary Force view themselves as the good side in this story. They believe the work they are doing on Earth is a benefit to the entire universe and it horrifies Ryan. She gets the first look at the brutality of Ti’ik and Chu’us, the antagonists of the novel. She gets a feel for how dangerous they are with the weapons they wield.

  • The Best Sample From Today

The best writing from today comes in the form of a failed attempt by a group of around three dozen humans trying their best to overwhelm TWO of the Expoletians. It afforded me the chance to give the reader the first true glimpse of the power of an Expoletian handgun.

Before the two aliens could do anything, a whistle reverberated off the buildings and a swarm of ravenous humans charged from the shadows. A couple of the rebels fired off guns, but the bullets had no effect on the thick armour of the aliens. Chu’us and Ti’ik drew massive pistols from holsters on their thighs. I would never forget the sickening crack that erupted from the hand cannons. Each shot was like a large cannon went off next to my ear. I could tell the aliens did not fire a gunpowder-based weapon as no smoke rose into the air and there was no reloading. I struggled to peer over the barrier. One of the humans made eye contact with me as he tried to crawl away after receiving a shot in the leg. His eyes widened and he reached out for me.

I had to do an ungodly amount of research for this paragraph alone. I intentionally avoid describing the weapons as that becomes a plot point closer to the climax of the novel. What the sequence does show is how advanced and disciplined Ti’ik and Chu’us are. For them to possess such powerful weapons with unnerving accuracy is a scary thought. It is eerily similar to real life, especially if you are a citizen of the United States.

  • How Productive I Felt I Was

Since I managed to complete both my goals for last week – building Daniel and Ryan’s relationship as well as the first interaction with the aliens, I feel I did more than enough work to compensate for my lack of energy. It is difficult to write about First Contact as everything I write is pure speculation.

There is not much more to say outside of a second mention to Professor Stephen Hawking, whose views and theories helped drive a lot of my imagination in the development of the universe Eden is a part of.

  • What I Intend To Write Next Week

Next week marks the 20,000 word milestone of Eden, and it will showcase a major confrontation between the protagonists of the novel and the antagonists. While the confrontation this week was quite intense, there was no real fight, but the seeds are in place for the constant back and forth Ryan will have with Ti’ik and Chu’us over the course of the novel.

Like, share and follow my blog for more or less of the same, but that’s what you get from me. You know I am a writer, and you will get writing stuff from me.
