Writing Report Week 6 – Eden

I did not have the issue I had last week, at least not to the same extent. I still had issue finding the motivation to write, but that is with any day this week. I’ve been writing in this challenge for six weeks, I believe that it is getting to me and affecting my psyche. It is as though I want to write, but my brain does not want me to do so. I have a complicated relationship with my novels, but it is a good one in the long run.

Thursday March 8 Writing Report (Previous Report)

Word Target: 2,500

Words Written: 2,514

  • Overview

Eden, like any other week, is quite difficult to write. Not because it is difficult in any way, but because of how recent the idea is. For comparison, Chronicles is something that is almost a decade old, while The Elder Ones and Reality are six years old. Eden as a concept is not even a year old, so by my standards it is in its infancy.

That infancy is what makes Eden hard to write. I do not have the full details sorted out and need to work on them as I go, but I find I write better that way, so I will continue to do what drives me to do better.

  • What I Did Today

Today continued on from where I left off last week and helped build the dynamic between characters. The notable dynamic is between Ryan and Daniel. They are foils to each other even though their upbringings are similar. I reveal a little about the similarities between their childhoods and more about Ryan’s background. I do not do anything without meaning and I want to portray a diverse cast of characters in everything I write because the world is a diverse place. None of my novels can be accused of “white-washing,” since, although my main characters are for the most part Caucasian, they are often uncommon variants. Ryan for example is Australian-Chinese and she states it in one of her inner monologues this week.

  • The Best Sample From Today

This week, my best work came from me displaying the immediate change in the world in a few hours of story time. It allows the reader to immerse themselves in the situation and get a feel for how different the world around the main cast is.

Karlie’s gentle touch on my shoulder broke me out of my funk. I looked around and realised the group stopped moving. I lay my eyes on Daniel and moved up next to him with every intention of getting confrontational with him. I did not get a chance before I saw what made him stop the group. A little over twenty miles away was what remained of Baltimore. Pillars of thick black smoke streamed into the sky and fires raged through the surrounding suburbs. Nothing appeared to be safe from the inferno and even the water was ablaze.

The inspiration for my description of the fires in Eden

I have this strange fascination with fire though I do not consider myself a Pyromaniac in any sense of the word. I love the idea that fire is a cleansing tool. It possesses the power to level an entire area so fast, but from an inferno life will flourish again. I drew on my own experience with fires, particularly the 2003 Canberra Bushfires that proved so devastating in the place that I live.

  • How Productive I Felt I Was

I continued to evade the antagonists of the novel this week, but I focused on building into the first true ‘meeting’ with them. I hope to create a sense of anticipation so that when the reader first meets the “Primitive Expoletian Empire,” they can see why they are an attraction to the novel.

I have remained consistent with my writing times this week, and I am proud of that. It is something that always irked me that I was inconsistent with how much I wrote and the time I wrote it in, so to see uniformity makes me feel vindicated from my slack past of writing.

  • What I Intend To Write Next Week

I will continue to build toward the first meeting with the “Primitive Expoletian Empire” as well as developing more of the relationship between Daniel and Ryan. Their dynamic is what drives a lot of the first part of the novel, because I feel the best conflict in a pseudo-ensemble novel comes from within the main cast. How they react to situations in their different way and how the compromise is key in developing a strong story.
